BioWare Shuts Down: EA Closes Legendary Studio, Cancels Mass Effect

Electronic Arts announced Wednesday, October 21, that it will close BioWare, the Edmonton-based studio behind the Mass Effect and Dragon Age franchises, bringing down the curtain on a run of more than 30 years. The closure is part of a wider restructuring at the publisher that includes roughly 400 job cuts.

A legendary run in role-playing games

BioWare was founded in 1995 by three doctors in Edmonton, Canada, and acquired by Electronic Arts in 2007. The studio built its name on richly written role-playing games, from Baldur's Gate and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic to the original Mass Effect trilogy and Dragon Age. Its later years were rockier: the multiplayer shooter Anthem (2019) strayed from the studio's single-player strengths and failed to land, while Mass Effect: Andromeda (2017) and Dragon Age: The Veilguard (2024) earned mixed reviews that disappointed longtime fans.

What the closure means

The next Mass Effect game — which would have been the fifth since the original in 2007 — has been canceled, according to reports that surfaced within hours of the announcement, including one about a leaked trailer. Bloomberg reports the restructuring cuts roughly 400 positions, while Variety puts the figure at about 3 percent of EA's workforce. At the same time, EA has paired Respawn Entertainment with DICE to develop a new Star Wars: Battlefront game. The moves land just after EA closed its $55 billion sale to Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund.

Fans and founders say goodbye

BioWare co-founder Trent Oster called it "a pretty sad day" in an interview with CBC Radio, reflecting on a studio that grew from a small group of friends making a game for fun into one of the industry's most respected names. Developers and fans spent the day posting tributes, and much of modern game storytelling — from branching dialogue to player-driven choices — traces back to Edmonton.
